Notes for Blackbird

Kaer Castle and Surroundings

For Kaer Castle, I used an amalgam of castles, but the main inspirations were Mont St. Michel, France; Corfe Castle, England; and Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland.  I loved the look and the town surrounding it, as well as the tidal bridge of Mont St. Michel.  There’s something about Corfe Castle and how it’s settled on the hill that appeals to me.  I like the idea of the bridge and the castle from Eilean Donan Castle for how Kaer Castle could look at a different point in time.

For the rock formation, I used Garden of the Gods and Bryce Canyon.  For the castle itself, I have envisioned it as being part of the rock formation but defined and separate from the rock itself.  I’ve included some pictures for those who don’t feel like clicking on the link.  The mountain in the background is Pikes Peak.

For the surrounding body of water and island that the castle is situated on, I drew inspiration from Crater Lake, OR.  I liked the idea of the castle sitting on an island in the middle of a lake surrounded by these magnificent red rocks.  The island in the story is probably a little further out from the main shore than is shown in the pictures below, and rather than it being a proper lake the body of water that the castle is located on is a tidal island.
